What did you take away from being part of such a widely-loved show in the mainstream?īLOOM: The most important thing I took away from Pose is the idea that my brothers and sisters, who are now my colleagues, can look out at each other and say, “Finally, we are here.”

MACIAS: Y ou were part of the last season of Pose. I’m standing on the shoulders of those people, and I take that everywhere I go. MACIAS: How has Chicago, your hometown, influenced you and maybe some of the roles that you choose?īLOOM: Chicago has a long legacy of Black entertainment coming from marginalized communities and going mainstream. MACIAS: What were your first auditions like when you started getting into acting?īLOOM: Every audition I went to, even if they said no to me, was a way to build my armor, to build my skin, to prepare for anything and everything. But that opportunity wasn’t really attainable, because those spaces didn’t allow us in the room unless you were a makeup artist or a hairstylist. MACIAS: When did you know that you want to pursue acting as a career,?īLOOM: At a young age, I lusted over the idea of one day being a Bond girl, or at the very least an actress. The owner of the store saw me and she was like ‘That’s my husband’s book. MACIAS: Can you tell me about that moment when you were discovered?īLOOM: I was in a store, flipping through a book that had images of all these beautiful Victoria’s Secret models, like Cindy Crawford and Cameron Diaz.

From her starring role in the Martin Scorsese-produced romance Port Authority, to her appearance in the final season of Pose, to her boundary-smashing cover shoot for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, the name on everyone’s lips is Leyna Bloom.ĮRNESTO MACIAS: On Port Authority, you worked with Danielle Lessovitz, why was it important to you to be part of a female-led movie? It’s the piercing gaze, the Old Hollywood glamour, and that unmistakable New York swagger. You see her, and it’s 10s across the board. All Clothing and Accessories (worn throughout) by Isabel Marant. “He is also from Chicago, reached out to me and congratulated me, sent me some bottles of wine - shout out to D-Wade! He’s raising a young trans daughter, and it was just truly powerful to know that the world is really changing in this moment.Leyna Bloom. They acknowledge that the world needs to change, and why has it taken so long?”īloom said she was also thrilled to hear from NBA legend Dwyane Wade. A lot of white men reached out to me, and not fetishizing or sexualizing me but acknowledging the fact that the world is changing and the decisions that Sports Illustrated is making allow me to not only just be a part of Sports Illustrated but to tell my story through them. “People from all different walks of life. “So many people hit me up,” she told Pride Source. The cover, widely recognized as a milestone in trans representation, has brought Bloom a lot of positive attention already. So the idea that there’s a magazine that’s on the level of Sports Illustrated that is acknowledging my life and what I do in this world with my life, wants me to be something or sees something inside of me, that’s just truly powerful to me.” “Because that was part of my vision board, you know? I would go to these places and see these billboards and just dream that one day that could be me. “I just… I honestly, oh my… even seeing a billboard of me anywhere just gives me chills,” she said. Rapper Megan Thee Stallion and gymnast Naomi Osaka appear on alternative versions of the cover.īloom spoke to Pride Source’s Chris Azzopardi in May and revealed at that time her excitement and anticipation.
